[01] First devlog! Moving quick

20th of December of 2025

First of all, sorry if I'm all over the place- I've never written a devlog before lol

Sooo, this little project is actually happening.. I first had this idea about a month ago out of nowhere, or if you really need some explanation, it's just that I periodically remember the existence of this concept, the Perpetual Stew, once in a while ever since I discovered it one or two years ago. As soon as I had an idea to make a game based on that, I was so unreasonably excited that I couldn't stop thinking about possible mechanics and visual style haha. But as one does, I dedicated all my time to write a document for it for 2 days and then forgot about it.

I was looking at the documents in my cloud a couple days ago when I saw it, and remembered I *had a very important pending game to make*. This game wouldn't make sense in any other form than mobile, and I was playing with Monogame until now, but I have absolutely no idea about mobile development in Monogame, so I googled and decided to go back to Unity for this project. And what a great idea it was, I feel like I'm doing everything 10 times faster than with monogame ^^' In two days I created the project, got familiar with the Unity application again and made a main scene with placeholders (I'm sorry it's so ugly but it works for me), fire and water level bars, and working buttons for those two elements, as well as defining in a very basic way all the "life" states of the stew (Alive + 4 ways to die). I also started thinking about how money could work in this game.

I've been using "Life", "Death" and all that because it really does make sense to me and makes it clearer to understand, but it's so funny to think those words are describing a soup!! hahahaa in some way, the premise of the game is caring for and feeding a soup, and watching it grow, as if it was your child~

Wireframe/mockup 1

First mockup of the main scene, I designed it after having the idea but before creating the project.

Fire and water diminishing. The water/liquid dwindles faster than the fire, I'll probably leave it like this.

State of the stew before the game starts

State of the stew (deceased by "Burnt") after I clicked on the button to fuel the fire when it was still too hot/too high, and it burnt.

Tomorrow I'd like to get the whole ingredient system going, at least in a basic manner: implement a drag and drop mechanic to carry ingredients into the cauldron, define properties of each ingredient, create a small (10~) catalogue of ingredients to play with their properties and different results, and if I do all of this quickly, I can try to make the ingredients ACTUALLY usable, meaning that they affect the stew and are stored in the ingredient history, but I doubt I'll be able to add that mechanic tomorrow.  I'll also try to add a "game speed" variable for playtesting instead of changing 2 or 3 numbers manually, that way I'll just be able to leave everything with the final speed that I want them to have in the game, and only have to change the global speed multiplier everytime I wanna playtest differently. Uh I'm so bad at explaining!

Some extras that could be done too are a drag and drop trash can to get rid of ingredients you don't wanna use (and free space in the tray), as well as start the money system, for now only getting X money per hour or per day that passes, as long as the stew is alive, obviously.
